Use Reading Level Diagnostics to measure your students’ reading levels (Lexile) at different times during the year, directly through Whooo’s Reading.
First, set your schedule for the reading level assessments. Click the drop-down arrow in the top right of your account, then Settings, then the Reading Level tab on the left (or go here while logged in).
At the bottom, you can choose dates for your students to take RLD assessments, such as quarterly:
When one of the dates set is today or before, students will see a prompt to start reading level assessments on their student dashboard, which looks like this:
The first time students start an assessment, they will do a short, initial diagnostic to help the system determine which reading passages to supply. Next, they will choose a passage to read under various topics. Giving them this choice helps them to enjoy the experience and feel in control of their assessment:
While reading the passage, there will be words that are omitted. Students will fill in those blanks with the correct options from a word bank of four options. Each of this omitted words is a "cloze item."
This cloze assessment style is based on research done by MetaMetrics (the company that created Lexile levels) specifically to determine students’ reading levels.
Each reading passage includes 5-10 cloze items, and students typically need to complete between 40-50 cloze items to reach a reading level. The number of cloze items that must be completed varies slightly from student to student, depending on how they do on each passage. Students will receive coins every time they finish an RLD passage.
You can see your students' progress percentage on their current cloze assessments, as well as a record of reading levels from past assessments, on your Data page under the Reading Levels tab.
You can also see a graph of their progress through the Reading Level Graph under the same Reading Level tab. You will then know if the books they are reading are within their reading level range (or Zone of Proximal Development, ZPD).
See our ZPD settings to learn more about how to use reading levels to keep students accountable during their independent reading.
The price of the Reading Level Diagnostics add-on to the Silver or Gold plan varies based on the number of classes. Reach out to learn more!
